At a glance, this joint is all about long wobbly benches waist deep in people on a medium-sized parking lot at the proletarian end of Jl. Wahid Hasyim. But there’s more to Babe Lili, of course – and it’s mainly smoke, which distinguishes it from most everything else. Not to mention, all kinds of grilled fish. Baronang, kerapu, kakap, kue, kambing-kambing, bawal, kaci-kaci, even the funny-tasting shark, and marinades of a potency that may have found its match elsewhere but loved nonetheless by regulars sold on its Abuba-like down-to-earthness. Try the squid in butter sauce, for something with a different bite. By 8pm, after the stock has dwindled, you’ll see the place for what it is: simply, a parking lot. Also on Jl. Prapanca Raya no. 27A, Jakarta Selatan (next to the Dharmawangsa Post Office); Tel. 7027 5772, Jl. Raya Pos Pengumben no. 18E (in front of Superindo Swalayan), Joglo, Jakarta Barat, Tel. 530 7021; Jl. Raya Gading Batavia Boulevard Barat (next to Makro), Jakarta Utara, Tel. 4585 4320; Jl. Pondok Ranji Raya Blok AP 30, Bintaro Jaya Sektor 3 (corner of Plaza Bintaro Jaya), Jakarta Selatan, Tel. 7388 3678
